See the mermaid show at Weeki Wachee Springs State Park
This activity made our overall list of the best summer activities in Florida, and lucky for our Timber Pines residents, this is just around the corner from them all year long! This is an iconic Old Florida attraction where performers wearing mermaid tails put on an entire show in front of a glass underwater theater. The theater is nestled in the side of a crystal-clear spring, and the “mermaids” keep the show flowing by breathing out of underwater hoses. It can be kitschy, but that’s part of the fun! It’s a must-see for families who live in Timber Pines.
Splash at Buccaneer Bay
This popular area attraction is also located inside Weeki Wachee Springs State Park. If you haven’t caught on, visiting this spot is one of the top things to do near Timber Pines! Buccaneer Bay is a water park built into a sparkling natural spring! The park has two slides: Cannonball and Pirate’s Revenge. There are also diving platforms and plenty of area to splash around. If you have little ones, they can play at Lil’ Mates Caribbean Cove. This wading pool area is designed for children age 6 and under. Pack a lunch or enjoy lunch on site at the restaurant!
Climb the tower at Key Vista Nature Park
This waterfront nature park is a quiet little getaway along the coast. It’s mostly made up of sand pine scrubs that stretch over 101 acres. Its most notable feature is the wooden observation tower you can climb for a birds eye view of the area. You may also want to check out neighboring Anclote Gulf Park.
Dine on the water in Hernando Beach
The nearby town of Hernando Beach is tucked into a collection of canals. There are many different waterfront restaurants to enjoy in this area. When you run out of things to do near Timber Pines, make the short drive here for a great dinner experience. Silver Dolphin is a colorful, unassuming spot with a cute patio and a country store that features local art, ice cream, homemade fudge and more. Sunset Grille is a popular spot for outdoor dining and live music. Hernando Beach Tropical Grille has all the tiki vibes at Hernando Beach Marina. No matter which spot you choose, you’re sure to have some good food, good views and good times.
Try something new at The Lift Adventure Park
For an out-of-the-box day of adventuring, check out The Lift Adventure Park in Hudson. It’s a floating water park composed mostly of inflatable slides, jumps and obstacle courses. There are 4 different ways to experience it: the wake park, the Aqua Chimp, the aqua park and the paddle and kayak option. The wake park allows you to try your hand at wakeboarding on a cable, even if you are a beginner. The Aqua Chimp is a floating ropes course that’s sure to challenge you. The inflatables can be found at the aqua park. If you’d rather explore a little further out, you can rent kayaks and paddle boards. If your idea of fun things to do near Timber Pines involves trying something new, this is the spot!
Visit the sponge docks in Tarpon Springs
This one is a little bit further from the other things to do near Timber Pines, but a really cool day trip nonetheless. Tarpon Springs is a boating community that’s best-known for its plentiful harvest of sea sponges. It’s actually the Sponge Capital of the World! This sponge industry in this area led to a thriving Greek community being founded in the area. That means you need to be sure to try one of the local Greek restaurants while you’re there! Stroll the docks and look for the sponge harvests and shop the local artisan shops that make handmade goods with the sponges. If you’re really adventurous, take go on a sponge diving excursion!
Try local spirits at NJoy Distillery
This craft distillery with a vintage theme is a fun evening out. They serve up house-distilled whiskey, rum and moonshine in a setting that’s reminiscent of pioneer days. You can take a tour and do a tasting of the different spirits they offer. If you’re looking for really unique things to do near Timber Pines, you can book a helicopter fly-in to the distillery! A helicopter will land you on the helicopter pad at Goff Ranch so you can enjoy a day at NJoy in style.
See the Spring Hill Pink Dinosaur
If you love quirky roadside attractions, this one is for you! Most area residents are familiar with the Spring Hill Pink Dinosaur, a vibrantly colored statue that sits along the road in the town of Spring Hill. It was originally built in the early 1960s by a taxidermist to promote his family’s museum, the Foxbower Wildlife Museum. The museum is no longer open, but the dinosaur has become a mainstay and underwent a restoration in 2015.
